Recipe: Red Bean Filled Mochi Balls


Sweet dessert made from rice and beans?! Yep, and it's really tasty. These are really fun sweet treats to make at home, especially if you've never tried them before


Red Bean Paste

  • 200 g red beans
  • 300 g caster sugar

Sweet Mochi

  • 3/4 cup rice flour
  • 3/4 cup cold water
  • 1/4 cup caster sugar
  • 100 g cornflour
  • 50 g toasted sesame seeds

Cook The Beans

Place the red beans in a pan and cover with about a litre of cold water. Heat to a simmer and cook for 5 minutes. Drain the beans into a colander, clean the pan and place the beans back into the pan with another litre of fresh cold water. Heat to a simmer again and cook very gently for 90 minutes, you might need to top it up with a little more liquid if too much evaporates off so that the beans remain covered.

Drain the beans again and place back into the pan again, this time with the sugar. Heat for another 5-10 minutes until the sugar dissolves and you’re left with a syrupy mixture that’s still loose enough to fall from a spoon (it will thicken as it cools). Transfer to a bowl and leave to cool.

Make The Mochi

Mix the rice flour, water and sugar together in a glass heat-proof bowl until you have a smooth paste. (You can use any volume container… just make sure the ratio is 1:3:3 – sugar:rice flour: cold water. Clingfilm the bowl and place into the microwave to cook on full power (800watts) to cook for 3 minutes, stopping to stir halfway through. Dump the hot and sticky dough into a tray scattered generously with the cornflour.

Toast Sesame Seeds

Toast the sesame seeds in a dry frying pan until they turn golden and release their natural oils, then cool in a bowl.


Step 5


Once cool enough to handle, you can mould the rice dough into small walnut-sized balls with a dollop of the cooled red bean paste in the centre, work quickly and use either cornflour dusted fingers to make it easier and less sticky. Roll the sweets in the sesame seeds to coat, brushing the mocha with water to help them stick if it’s too dry.
