We hadn't heard of these until you guys requested... we were missing out. No longer, and nor need you. These fried dough pieces are tossed in cinnamon sugar and served with warm nutella.
Dissolve the dried yeast in the water and milk along with a pinch of sugar, making sure it’s at body temperature. Any hotter will ‘kill’ the yeast. Leave to one side for 5 minutes to activate.
Beat together in a mixing bowl the egg, salt, 1 tbsp of caster sugar, vanilla and oil. Add the flour, followed by the yeasty milk mixture and knead it until you have a soft dough. This will take 5-10 minutes. Place the dough into an oiled bowl and cover with a tea towel, leaving it to prove and double in size for an hour.
Knock the air out of the dough and roll small amounts (about egg sized) of dough on a lightly floured surface so that they’re rectangular slabs about 1cm thick.
Heat the oil in a frying pan to 180°C. Lower the rectangular paddles of dough into the oil and fry for 3-4 minutes, turning over halfway through, until golden all over.
Scoop them out and drain on kitchen roll to get rid of excess grease. Toss them in a mixture of caster sugar and cinnamon and serve whilst still warm… even better with a drizzle of chocolate spread.
