Recipe: Sweet Cherry Chocolate Momos


We've recently fallen head over heels with momos. A street food inspired steamed dumpling usually filled with spiced meat. BUT we thought hey, why can't we make a sweet momo? And voila. These parcels of heaven are filled with cherry, dark chocolate and marzipan to give you a delectable treat like no other.


For The Pastry

  • 120 g plain flour
  • 1/2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 60 ml water

For The Sweet Cherries

  • 1 star anise
  • 100 ml water
  • 100 g caster sugar
  • 100 g pitted cherries

For The Filling

  • 100 g dark chocolate
  • 100 g marzipan
Make the Dough

Step 1

Make The Dough

In a mixing bowl combine the flour, oil and salt. Add 1 tbsp of water at a time until it comes together into one ball of firm dough. Cover the bowl with clingfilm and rest for 30 minutes.

Soak the Cherries

Soak The Cherries

Boil the water and sugar and let it bubble for 5 minutes with the star anise, then drop in the cherries and remove from the heat. Let them soak until room temperature.

Make the Dumplings

Tear 20-25 gram balls of dough and press into circles. Now roll them out as thin as possible and cut out discs 10cm in diameter. Place a chunk of dark chocolate in the centre, then place a ball of marzipan on top with one of the sugar soaked cherries. Dab the pastry with a little water and pinch one side together, then turn and pinch another open side together. Repeat with a third pinch so that all three pinched seams meet in the middle (see the video for a proper explanation!).

Heat a little water in a saucepan until it comes to a boil. Turn the heat down low and place a steamer basket over the saucepan.

Place the momos onto a small square of greaseproof paper and drop them into the steamer basket (you’ll probably have to do this in batches, don’t let them touch or they’ll stick). Place the lid on the basket and steam for 10 minutes, until the dough doesn’t feel sticky and looks slightly transparent. Makes 16 momos
