Recipe: Pulled Pork Sandwich


BBQ pulled pork is HUGE over in the America but we don't get enough of it over here... It's about time we change that!So we've taken matters into our own hands and cooked up a big batch for the crew. You'll love this one!


  • 500 ml water
  • 2 tbsp honey
  • 2 tbsp dark brown sugar
  • 1 tbsp smoked paprika
  • 150 ml water
  • 50 ml cider vinegar
  • 150 g tomato ketchup
  • 2 tsp smoked Tabasco sauce
  • 2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 white cabbage
  • 1 lime
  • 1 tbsp white wine vinegar
  • 1 tbsp caster sugar
  • 10 white hot dog rolls
  • 1 onion
  • 2 carrots
  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 1.5 kg pork shoulder
  • 2 tbsp smoked paprika
  • 2 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tbsp garlic powder
  • 1 handful dark brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp tomato purée
  • 500 ml beer

Preheat the oven to 160°C.

Prepare And Sweat The Veg

Peel and slice the onion, carrots and garlic. Heat a glug of oil in a large saucepan and start to fry the veg.

Cut away excess fat and skin from the pork shoulder. Rub the pork with the dry spices and the sugar. Add the pork to the pan with the veg and brown a little on all sides.

Stir in the tomato purée, then the beer, water and heat to a boil. Cover with a lid and place into the oven to gently cook for 3 hours.

Add the honey, sugar, smoked paprika, water, vinegar, tomato ketchup, Tabasco and Worcestershire sauce to a small saucepan and heat until everything has dissolved together. Reduce the sauce until it thickens slightly.

Cut the cabbage into quarters and slice finely, placing in a bowl. Throw all the slaw ingredients in with the cabbage and toss.

Tear the pork into strips using two forks as soon as it’s cooled enough to handle, discarding all excessive fat and stir in some cooking liquid.

Spoon the pork into the hot dog bun. Drizzle over the bbq sauce and pack the slaw into the bun.

You can tell it's from America from the amount of sweet stuff in a savoury dish: brown sugar, caster sugar, honey and all the shop bought sauces (corn/glucose syrups). Just for a very special occasion unless you aspire to the figure associated with the BBQ crowd.


It would be helpful if the ingredients were split up into the constituent parts rather than just a long list. It's a bit clearer on the video.


One of the things that I have trouble with on Pulled Pork is that the BBQ sauce that accompanies is normally quite sweet. This smokey treat helps solve that issue with a bit of magic from Chinese Cooking. Let's crack on.
