Let’s get baking pronto…
It may sound obvious, but for the cake decorating to be successful, the bake needs to work. Here are a few tips to help you create the best bake every time. YOU CAN DO IT!
First up is equipment. If you’ve got your equipment sorted out, you’re already on a roll. These pieces help me SO much. Shop around a bit and you will find them so much cheaper than certain shops, and you won’t regret it. My baking cupboard is steadily growing, but these are my essentials for most bakes! Don’t get me wrong, you don’t need all of these when you’re starting out, but to decorate with ease, they will help!
Cake Tins – Parchment Paper – Offset spatulas – Regular Spatulas – A Stand Mixer – Straight Edged Scrapers – Turntable – Disposable Piping Bags – Rolling Pins – A Range of Piping Tips.
1. Weigh your ingredients and be accurate
This may sound obvious but baking is basically science. If you don’t get the measurements right the reaction won’t be the same and you won’t get the result you want. Whilst it’s great to experiment, stick to the recipe first.
2. Use good quality ingredients
You get out what you put in, simple as that.
3. Use the same temperature ingredients
Loads of recipes tell you to use eggs, milk, and butter at room temperature. But if you’ve forgotten to take it out of the fridge in advance, it can be really tempting to skip this detail. Don’t, just don’t. When it comes down to it, ingredients behave differently at different temperatures. Your ingredients will combine better at room temperature and your cake will bake at an even rate if it is all the same temperature when it goes in the oven.
4. Be patient
Don’t expect to be able to create baking bonanzas straight away. These things take practise. Don’t be disheartened if it doesn’t go your way, it’s all part of the experience! Start simple, then build yourself up to more extravagant recipes.
5. Be confident
At the end of the day, you’re baking to have fun. If you think you can nail a croquembouche, you CAN nail a croquembouche. OK?
6. The Actual Bake
The main things I think about when making a cake are cake flavour, cake filling, style and decorations. You can base any cake off a simple style recipe and then try something. I have the basics of a vanilla cake down to a T, and now I can try more with it. Chocolate, Fruit, Caramel, Coffee, Custard, Nut, and more! SO much can be done when you stick to the basics.
