Do you LOVE lentils? Course you do!
There’s nothing more comforting than a home-cooked meal. That’s all well and good but sometimes you just feel like you’ve got nothing in. To prevent you from reaching for the take-out menu, we’ve put together a handy checklist of store cupboard ingredients to make sure you never go hungry.
Don’t know what to have? Then have pasta! It such a great fail safe option. The simplest pasta dishes only need a little butter and seasoning. Top that off with a sauce and a sprinkle of cheese and you’re laughing.
It’s a proven fact that all your problems can be solved through the hypnotising smell of frying onions. Why should you have to be without that smell in your life? Let’s be honest, you’ll struggle to find a recipe out there that doesn’t start with “finely dice and sweat the onion…”
Ok, so I put garlic in pretty much everything I cook, well, maybe not everything but I do really love it! Chop it up and add to sauces or even roast a bulb whole, garlic is always a good idea.
The number of times we’ve started making a risotto or curry only to realise there’s no stock left is ridiculous. You’d think we’d have learnt by now! Always have some stock cubes in the cupboard it’s the easiest way to add flavour to any dish. If you want to get a bit more fancy, next time you make your own stock, freeze it into cubes
Rice is ridiculously versatile. There are so many dishes that use rice as their base whether it’s risotto, curry or rice pudding, rice is a staple and you need to have him around at all times.
If you are ever in need of a super quick and easy breakfast oats are your best friend. With a dash of milk and a drizzle of honey, you’ve got a filling and healthy breakfast that has cost you literally pennies. Soak them overnight and add fruit for a bircher museli style joyous occasion.
Omelettes are immense. Enough said.
Simple baking ingredients are a must for your store cupboard. The simplest cakes out there only have around 4 ingredients, but you’re not going to get anywhere without flour.
Some people have claimed that lentils are the world’s healthiest food. We have no proof whatsoever to back up that statement but they sure are useful to have around. Their flavour hasn’t won any awards but the great thing about lentils is, they hold the flavour of whatever you put them with. There are a million (ish) varieties of lentils out there. Have a little experiment and see what you like!
10. SALT AND PEPPER
Ok so salt and pepper are technically 2 things but it would be rude to have one without the other!
If you liked this you’ll love…
