Save the bread, save the world!

We are always being encouraged to do our bit for the environment, turning off lights, having showers instead of baths, and now we are even being told that we can’t wash our cars. But when thinking of helping the environment we rarely consider the food we waste.

Take bread for example, 12 million loafs of bread are sold each day in the UK of which 32% is simply thrown away. That accumulates to a whopping 3.84 million loafs of bread every day, wasted. But these are just numbers, and I’ve never been much of a maths person so here’s how I like to think of it: the amount of bread wasted every day in the UK is equivalent to the weight of 2,683 Mini Coopers or 386 double decker buses or nearly 13 Boeing 747’s. Imagine that over the period of a year.

But more to the point, with each loaf costing approximately £1.25 the UK is wasting £4.8 million a day. So for all you number crunchers out there that’s £1,752,000,000 a year. (WOW that’s a lot of zeros.)

But here at SORTED we would like to offer some solutions for this ‘bread wasting pandemic’! And just to clear this up now, NO ‘Breading’ is not one of the solutions, no matter how funny some pictures may be.

(For those of you who don’t know of "breading". Here are some examples we found online!)

Anyway, the recipes Ben’s been busy with use stale, frozen or the end slices of loafs (which I think we are all guilty of wasting) in delicious recipes which don’t require fresh bread straight from the oven. Here at SORTED we love a bit of fresh bread but we hate seeing food go to waste and we can see potential in the stale bread that otherwise is fed to the ducks.

So why not try making bread crumbs from bread-ends to coat your Italian chicken burger or using stale bread for dunking in your very own Broccoli and bean soup with Brie dunkers? Another little trick for your wasted bread is to chop it into cubes simply coat in olive oil, salt and pepper and place in the oven for a delicious croutons to accompany our asparagus and beetroot salad.

By using some of SORTED’S simple recipes from the Long Life Loaf meal plan you will be helping reduce the waste, saving money but most importantly eating some cracking good food.

Ever wondered where the saying ‘The best thing since sliced bread’ comes from? In 1928 in a bakery in Battle Creek, Michigan Otto Frederick Rohwedder invented the first slice and wrap bread machine. A mere 5 years later an astonishing 80% of all bread in the USA was sold sliced and wrapped. And there you have it ‘The best thing since sliced bread’.
