‘They’re green and nasty!’ your kid screams when presented with a plate that has vegetables on it. Well, we love veg and don’t think its nasty (although it is sometimes green) but we understand that as a parent it can be a huge struggle to get healthy food into your child when they are not co-operating with either the ‘choo choo train’ or the airplane. This week’s meal pack gives you some tasty grub that is suitable for the whole family but hides the vegetables from those fussy ‘customers’… Be it your child, husband or even yourself. We all know that we should be eating 5 a day but when you stop and think about it, it’s quite difficult to achieve, especially if you’re trying to get your meddlesome kids to eat their share too. So what is the best way to ensure you and your children get 5 a day? We’ve got some tips and tricks to get that fruit and veg into your children.
Snack time- Have a piece of fruit as a mid-morning snack ‘Supermarket Sweep’- Get your kids involved in the shopping - give them their own fruit & veg shopping list, get them to race you to finding the cabbage or let them choose one item of fruit of veg they want in their food and go home and create a recipe for its use. Whatever it is make it fun and hopefully the kids might begin to become less fussy. Make some noise- Smoothie makers are darn noisy but they are a great way to make fresh fruit appealing to children, get the kids to help out by choosing what they want in their smoothie. 4.Ice it up- With your left over smoothie mix you can make some great ice lollies. This home-made fresh fruit lolly is fun for you and the kids to make, tasty on a hot summers day and even helps toward your five a day. 5.- If loving veg is not an option, hide it!!! – Click below to see our tips on hiding veg!
Remember a portion of fruit of veg is around 80g. This means two small plums or a large green apple would count as one of your five a day
Hide your veg in some of SORTED’s easy to follow recipes, they will taste great and the kids won’t even know they’re there. This week’s meal pack offers a tasty Mediterranean Vegetable pasta bake that uses a load of blended vegetables to make a smooth sauce that’s full of flavours and disguised veg. It’s tasty and your ‘fussy customers’ will be none the wiser.
How about a family favourite, Fish Fingers and chips, which has a hidden layer of pureed red pepper and of course mushy peas which you may be able to persuade the kids to eat (Top Tip- try letting the kids mush up the peas!!)
Or distract you kids with bow tie shaped pasta or any other fun shape you can get your hands on in a tasty Sausage and Mushroom Pasta.
