The supermarket Italian ready meal market makes up over £400 million worth of sales each year in the UK alone... twice as popular as Indian ready meals which comes in second. But we think it's time to step away from the chiller cabinet and beat these slippery, overcooked, soggy dishes by cooking some awesome Italian treats at home. Below we have 3 options that should do just the job.
Meat and Fish
1 packet of lean minced beef (500g)
Fruit and Veg
1 white onion
1 red onion
1 bulb of garlic
1 small head of celery
1 carrot
a handful of mushrooms
bunch of fresh asparagus
1 small butternut squash
fresh sage
fresh parsley
Dairy
wedge of Parmigiano (200g)
carton of double cream (300ml)
ball of mozzarella
Dry Ingredients
a jar of dried oregano
bottle of red wine
bottle of white wine
1 tin of chopped tomatoes (400g)
pack of spaghetti (at least 400g)
packet of ready made gnocchi (400g)
risotto rice (at least 250g)
1 litre of vegetable oil (for deep frying)
Frozen
small bag of frozen peas
Check you also have...
a glug of olive oil
knob of butter
squeeze of tomato puree
1 beef stock cube
1 chicken stock cube
a splash of milk
a splash of Worcestershire sauce
2 eggs
handful of flour
two handfuls of breadcrumbs stashed in the freezer
This pack contains three Italian recipes that stand alone. They don't have to be made on consecutive days, but can be enjoyed whenever you fancy a taste of Italy. One thing to remember though...
1) Once you've made the Spaghetti Bolognaise recipe remember to hold back 1/5 of the mince mix (about 100g) for the Arancini Balls recipe. You can either store it in a tupperware container in the fridge for up to 3 days until you're ready to make the Arancini using the leftover mince... or stash it in the freezer for up to 3 months. Simply defrost overnight or on a defrost setting of your microwave for a few minutes so it's ready to fill the rice.
Also... as a bonus each recipe uses a single glass of wine... but that leaves you with a couple of opened bottles (one red and one white) to enjoy with dinner. Not only does the meal pack give you the ingredients you need... but the wine to go with it!
So, grab the Parmesan, open a bottle of Pinot and tuck into these Italian favourites!
