Smoothie Blending 101: 5 Tips & 5 Tricks

Smoothie 101 Header

There are two reasons we love smoothies at the moment:

a) It’s just been the Christmas holidays and we ate the equivalent of three hundred and seventy two Epic Chocolate Cakes in one week.

b) They make us think about SUMMER and we love summer more than Olaf the snowman.

So now that you know that, read on. We’ll tell you all you need to know about how to make a smoothie. We also have some handy recipes along the way to help you with the basics.

1. CHOOSE YOUR WEAPON

Be it a big blender or a small hand held one, you will need some sort of blending device to embark on the epic smoothie battle. You can pick them up cheaply. Just make sure you invest in a good one if you’re serious about the game.

2. GET BACK TO BASE

The home ground is your most important territory. Choose your fruit and veg wisely as it can go a tad wrong down the line. You want to ensure that you have the right balance if you actually want it to taste good. Berries do a good job of masking out tastes like kale and avocado. But if you’re adding carrots, it’s a struggle to hide the little orange monsters.

3. SLURP OR DIE

Dairy? Soy? Plant based mixers like almond or coconut milk? Plain old water? A lot depends on the base. For example, you don’t want to mix too many citrus based fruits with dairy in case of a curdling situation. Play cupid and matchmake your ingredients to perfection.

4. LET LOOSE

Blend up the fruit and veg, then add the liquid gradually afterwards. This is so you can decide on the consistency you would like to achieve. You can’t unbake a cake and you certainly can’t unblend a smoothie. Add some ice cubes in for a slushy chilled effect.

5. SWEEEEET. JOB DONE.

Fruit has natural sugars anyway, so don’t add any more sugar! If you want to balance out sharp or bitter flavours, try natural syrups or even a bit of honey.

And finally…. experiment!

The End.

1. GO FROZEN

Freeze your fruit first! Then you won’t need to add in any ice cubes will you? You can even buy pre frozen fruit at the supermarket- guaranteed to save you money. Kerching.

2. GET EXTRA GAINZ

Add nasty tasting but nutritious stuff in teaspoons to your mix. Think spirulina, chia seeds, flax seeds… a smoothie is one of the best ways to achieve your five a day and you won’t even taste it!
