Macaroni Cheese, Mac and Cheese, Macaroni Pie or Mac ‘n’ Cheese (if you’re a total hipster). No matter how you know it, we’re all agreed that a decent portion of the stuff is the best thing ever. It’s one of the 10 Commandments of Comfort Food. It’s THE DREAM.
I’m obsessed. I’ve always been on the endless hunt to scout out the best of the best. Thankfully its popularity has risen in recent years as it crops up on more and more menus under the side dish category and beautiful people are spending their precious time and careers writing whole books dedicated to the stuff.
So what makes a good Mac and Cheese at home? How do you guarantee to blow the tastebuds off anyone who ventures across your pot? Follow these steps to the nines and the whole neighbourhood will be jealous of you.
1. You’ve Got To Really Know Your Stuff
Get out and about and experience the world. You won’t know a good Mac and Cheese until it slaps you round the face when you’re least expecting it. Cook up recipes created by other people… visit food festivals… go to specialist Mac and Cheese restaurants (yes, yes they do exist) and stuff yo’ face.
2. Master the Base and Stick To Your Guns
All the joy of the Mac and Cheese comes from the base sauce so you need to learn how to nail it with your eyes closed and call your first born son Roux. Once you’ve got a good one under your belt, there’ll be no stopping you. Sorted are here to help.
3. Stay Simple On The Mac Front
You shouldn’t really feel the need to stray too far from elbow macaroni as it does the job just fine, thanks to its shape. If you use something else, let us know, our mouths are open.
4. The Cheesier The Better…
Yes really, you need all the cheese. You want to stick a fork in the finished creation, remove it and see the beautiful strings of cheese oozing and glistening in the sun.
5. …So Include At Least 3 Types
Cheddar, Monterey Jack, Gouda, Gruyere, Parmesan, Dolcelatte, Stilton, Roquefort… the list goes on and on so why limit yourself to one cheese? I don’t know either- go nuts!!!
6. Get Experimental With The Filling
Mac and Cheese is like a burger. Technically you can turn it into any meal you want. Beef Wellington Mac and Cheese. Check. Smoky Bacon Mac and Cheese. Check. Pizza Mac and Cheese. YES. Draw inspiration from anything and everything to add to your base pie and you won’t regret it. The more you experiment, the more you’ll be able to experiment later down the line.
7. Pimp Your Toppings
The fun doesn’t stop. Ever. Parmesan flakes… bacon crumb… pulled pork… jalapenos… marshmallows… Ew. And for the love of all things beautiful in this world be sure to crisp the top under a grill.
8. Ensure It’s Visually Stunning
When you’re happy with what you’ve achieved make sure it’s representative on the outside too. Take care and pride in your work and it’ll be a masterpiece.
9. Load Up Your Instagram
Now get snappy happy. What’s the point being a total Mac and Cheese pro if you can’t show off about it? Get some fork shots in there. #foodporn
10. Get Creative and Go Wild
The beauty about Mac and Cheese is that you don’t have to confine your Mac and Cheese to just Mac and Cheese! Deep fried balls, a Mac and Cheese Grilled Sandwich… The Mac and Cheese Burger?! It’s comfort food so you can do whatever the hell you want and no one can judge.
11. Pay Your Friends To Tell You It’s Incredible
If all else fails then bribery will do the trick. Thier smiles of joy and wonder will massage your ego and you’ll feel King of the World.
