8 Things You Didn’t Know About Okra

HEADER1

We get asked a lot of foodie questions on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Hanging out with James and Ben all day every day means we get to tap into their food knowledge! Having said that, the biggest source of information and advice comes from you guys, the SORTEDfood community! (Soz James).

On that note, we wanted to get involved with Okra. We’ve used it before in an excellent recipe but to find out more we reached out to you guys on Twitter for some advice. Here are some things we learnt…

1. Another name for Okra is ladies fingers. Because that’s not creepy at all…

2. When cooked, Okra turns into what can only be described as bit of a goo fest. This can be limited by preparing the Okra with acidic ingredients first, such as vinegar or lemon juice.

3. Okra leaves can be eaten raw in salads and are supposed to be ridiculously good for you.

4. Don’t wash your Okra until you are ready to eat it. Otherwise, you’ll just end up with the whole goo situation again…

5. Roasted Okra seeds can be ground up to make a drink similar to coffee. As we all know, you can never have too much coffee.

6. Move aside Kale there’s a new super food in town. Okra is known as a super veggie due to it’s crazy high levels of vitamin A, vitamin C and antioxidants.

7. The first people to cultivate Okra were the ancient Egyptians. No surprises there, they are such trend setters.

8. Avoid buying older or larger Okra. That’s  used to make rope and paper so not an idea texture for eating!

Enough of our new found Okra knowledge, there are some great SORTEDfood community recipes with Okra that you can find here, here and here.

If you make any epic Okra recipes, remember to use #SORTEDfood so we can see your creations!
