7 Wacky Kit Kat Flavours You’ll Come Across In Japan

Kit Kat Header

Kit Kats are a popular chocolate bar the world over… but it seems they have a very special audience in Japan. Although you can get a few different flavours and products in the UK, that’s nothing compared to the 200+ flavours that have launched in Japan in the last 15 years!

Yes, that sounds ridiculous but they really aren’t afraid of putting just about any flavour into a Kit Kat. I picked up just a few of the odd combinations:

1. GREEN TEA

One of the most popular teas in Japan and used exclusively in the Tea Ceremonies of Kyoto. The bitter, dry flavour works pretty nicely with the chocolate… although not sure about the colour of the bar!

2. RASPBERRY

Sweet, slightly sharp and very pink. Not a particularly surprising favour for a sweet… but for a chocolate bar it definitely stands out! Pretty tasty though!

3. SAKE

The national drink of Japan… it would be crazy not to include a bar flavoured with the fermented rice wine. It’s pretty subtle really and don’t worry, you won’t get drunk from it!

Sake

4. SHINSU APPLE

These red apples are pretty common in Japan… I bought a few whilst in the north at a morning market in Takayama… they are HUGE! The apple itself is lovely, but the artificial apple flavour wasn’t great in a Kit Kat. OK, but not the best.

5. WASABI

Yep, you heard it right. The horseradish-like root with a mustard heat is surprisingly nice with chocolate. The one I thought would be most odd, actually isn’t too bad at all. Not sure I’d be drawn enough to buy another bag of them, but certainly unique!

6. STRAWBERRY CHEESECAKE

Now we’re talking! They’ve done all sorts of baked goods flavours over the years… including cookies, cheesecakes and pies. This one isn’t bad at all. Considering how expensive strawberries in Japan are… this gets the thumbs up from me!

7. RED BEAN

Red bean is a common sweet filling in buns, dumplings and sandwiches. Have to be honest, not my favourite. In fact the chilled red bean soup I tried for dessert once I couldn’t even finish. So not sure why I bought it in chocolate bar form… it met my expectations… nothing more!
