10 Things You Should Always Have In Your Baking Box

Let’s get baking…

CrinkleCookies1

Ever had the urge to just bake a cake? It’s a feeling we are all too familiar with. There’s nothing worse than having that feeling and not having what you need in the cupboard. To avoid any drama, we’ve put together a list of things your should always have in. That way, you’ll never have to go without cake.

1. Plain Flour

Ok so we are starting with an obvious one but let’s be honest, if you’re baking anything you’re not going to get very far without flour.

2. SF Flour

Self raising flour is just another one of those essentials that your recipe is going to expect you have in the cupboard. It’s not very glamourous but it’s all about what you do with it.

3. Gluten Free Flour

There are so many different GF flours out there, it’s worth experimenting as you will find some work better than other depending on what you are baking. Believe me though, your gluten free friends will thank you.

4. Baking Powder

You’ll need some of this kicking about if you want your cakes to resemble light fluffy clouds. Or Bicarbonate of soda, let’s be honest, no one really knows the difference, and i’m pretty sure there’s no real need for both.

5. Cocoa Powder

How are you going to make a Chocolate Meringue Cake or Chocolate Chip Cookies without cocoa powder? This is essential. In hindsight probably should be at the top of this list…

6. Chocolate

If you buy bars of chocolate as opposed to chips then you have wayyy more flexibility. If the recipe needs chips there’s nothing stopping you from cutting the bar up. Also, it’s always useful to have a bar of chocolate on hand. One square for the recipe, one square for you…

7. Dried Fruit

This is a bit of a cheat. When we say dried fruit we mean anything from raisins, sultanas, dried apricots… It’s super useful to have a load of these guys stacked up in a little Tupperware tower. They take forever to go off and will often come in handy whether you’re baking or just looking for a little something extra for your porridge.

8. Caster Sugar

Out of all the sugars out there, caster sugar is dependable and versatile. If you’re only going to buy one, make it this one.

9. Icing Sugar

Wait, and this one… Just imagine you made an adorable batch of cupcakes only to find you didn’t have the icing sugar to finish them off? You’d be understandably devastated. We would hate for you to experience that kind of heartache. Just buy some icing sugar ok?

10. Vanilla Extract

This is something that you’ll find loitering on the ingredients list of most baking recipes. This one isn’t one you want to skimp on though. Don’t be buying any of that vanilla essence. Get the good stuff, believe me, you can taste the difference.
